What is online marketing?
To understand what online marketing (also named Internet marketing, web marketing or digital marketing) is, we first have to define the term marketing:
“Marketing is a widely used term to describe the communication between a company and the consumer audience that aims to increase the value of the company or its merchandise or, at its simplest, raises the profile of the company and its products in the public mind.” (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marketing).
The main difference between online marketing and “traditional” marketing is the former’s focus on using digital media to realize specific marketing goals. Nowadays, there is a continuously increasing list of online media to choose from:
- Affiliate marketing
- Display advertising
- Content marketing
- Email marketing
- Search engine marketing:
- Search engine advertising
- Search engine optimization
- Social Media
- Viral marketing
Typical traditional marketing media are:
- Print (magazines, newspapers)
- Out of home (including instore advertising)
